A century brick porch enclosure, half enclosed in the Toronto Beaches. The homeowners wanted a sheltered front entry and real storage, but not at the cost of the living room’s original bay window. D2 Build enclosed only the door bay, left the window open to the light, and rebuilt the front yard with new interlock and landscaping to match.
This Beaches home had a wide covered porch running the full width of the façade, with the front door at one end and a large bay window serving the living room at the other. Enclosing the entire footprint would have delivered more square footage, and buried the living room’s front window behind an interior wall, turning the brightest room in the house into an interior one.
So we built to half the width. The new enclosure wraps only the entry bay, ending at the original brick pier. The bay window stays exactly where it was: open to the street, open to the light, untouched. What the homeowners gained is a weather-tight vestibule for coats, boots, parcels and everything else that used to pile up inside the front door.
The original brick piers and stone caps were retained and integrated into the new structure, so the addition reads as part of the house rather than an add-on bolted to the front of it.
The front yard was rebuilt at the same time, so the finished entry didn’t land on a failing parking pad.
D2 Build enclosed half a Beaches porch and left the better half alone. The homeowners got a sheltered, storage-ready front entry, a new interlock driveway, and a rebuilt front yard — and the living room still has its window.
