Riverdale Porch Enclosure For Added Space

Additional Project Details

In Riverdale, D2 Build shored and retained the existing porch roof, rebuilt the floor structure and framed insulated walls beneath it, and completed the porch enclosure through a Toronto winter, turning a mostly unused covered porch on a semi-detached into a conditioned year-round space, finished in navy lap siding against the home’s original stone.

Porch Enclosure In Riverdale:

Building A Room Under An Existing Porch Roof

On a semi-detached, the front porch roof is a shared structure. The roof ties directly into the neighbouring unit, so it could not come down. D2 Build shored the existing roof and posts, stripped the porch to its framing, and built the new walls up underneath what was already there.

Underneath, the original porch deck was removed entirely and replaced with a new pressure-treated floor structure], framed and insulated to carry a heated room rather than an outdoor platform.

The second-storey original stone was left untouched. The new navy lap siding stops at the porch roofline and lets the original masonry above carry the rest of the elevation. The contrast is deliberate, and it’s what keeps the addition from reading as a patch on a Riverdale street where the neighbouring facades are all original.

Structure & Exterior

The existing porch roof and posts were shored and retained, tying the enclosure into the shared structure of the semi without disturbing the attached unit. The original porch deck was demolished and replaced with a new pressure-treated floor system, framed to interior loads and insulated below. The exterior is finished in deep navy wood-grain lap siding with white casing and trim, new vented soffit, fascia, and eavestrough, and a cedar privacy screen concealing the A/C condenser and utility meters at the side of the entry.

Windows & Doors

A new full-lite exterior door with a transom above sits in the new front wall, fitted with a black handleset, a matte black wall sconce, and a video doorbell. Site work included new pressure-treated entry steps, black powder-coated aluminum railings, black house numbers, and a wall-mounted mailbox.

A Modern, Elegant Porch Enclosure That Matches Riverdale Character

D2 Build gave this Riverdale home a brand new character. Keeping the shared porch structure, replacing the deck with an insulated floor system, the full perimeter turned an unused seasonal porch into a finished, insulated room, adding new space to the home without building up. Navy lap siding against the home’s original stone, a wide new window and full-lite entry, and new steps and railings finished the front of the house to match.
